RED ANGEL PEAR

The Red Angel brand pear originated from a cross between the Red Bartlett and the Corella pear made in USA.

​

DESCRIPTION

The fruit has a distinct white flesh and a deep red colored skin with a yellow background. The skin changes from dark to bright red when fully ripe. The pear is very sweet, low acid flavor with a mild buttery texture. The Red Angel is excellent for fresh eating and is highly attractive on salads and also as an excellent quality dessert pear. The tree produces medium to large fruit that are uniform in shape, and are typically harvested in March.

 

SEASONALITY

The seasonality for this pear is from March to December.

PAPPLE PEAR

The Papple pears were developed by the Plant and Food Research Station in New Zealand to create a new hybrid category known for its long storage capabilities and appealing visual novelty.

DESCRIPTION

Papple pears are small to medium in size and are round to conical in shape, similar in appearance to an apple with a short, brown stem. The smooth green skin transforms to a mottled, almost iridescent, orange-red when ripe and is covered in many prominent lenticels and yellow patches. The flesh is cream-colored to ivory, firm, crisp, moist, and dense, encasing a very small central core with tiny black-brown seeds. When ripe, Papple pears are crunchy, juicy, and sweet with a floral aroma.

 

SEASONALITY

Papple pears are available in the late spring through summer in the southern hemisphere, which is in the autumn and winter in the northern hemisphere.

PACKHAM PEAR

Packham pears are a cross between two English pears, a williams’ bon chrétien, more commonly known as a bartlett.

DESCRIPTION

Packham pears are medium to large in size and are irregular in shape with a bulbous, wide bottom that tapers to a smaller rounded neck with a slender, dark brown stem. Similar in appearance to a bartlett pear, the skin transforms from green to pale yellow when ripe and is covered in patches of russeting, prominent lenticels, and small, smooth bumps. The flesh is white to ivory and is fine-grained, moist, and soft encasing a central core with a few, black-brown seeds. When ripe, Packham pears are juicy and creamy with a sweet, aromatic flavor.

 

SEASONALITY

Packham pears are available in the spring through winter in the northern hemisphere, which is in the autumn through spring in the southern hemisphere.

BEURRE BOSC PEAR

Bosc pears have appeared in paintings, photographs, and drawings for centuries due to their unique shape, colouring, and unusual russet texture.

DESCRIPTION

Beurre Bosc pears are medium to large in size and are oblong in shape with a rounded bottom that gradually tapers to an elongated neck and a slender green-brown stem. The thick skin is golden tan and is covered in rough, brown russeting with some mottling. The ivory to off-white flesh is firm, dense, and crisp with an intense honeyed aroma and has a central, soft core encasing a few small black-brown seeds. When ripe, Bosc pears are juicy, crunchy, and have a very sweet flavour with notes of woodsy spice.

 

SEASONALITY

Bosc pears are available in autumn through early spring.

CORELLA PEAR

The first Corella pears were grown in the Barossa Valley in southern Australia by German settlers during the late 19th century. Today they are grown predominately in Australia and can also be found in Asia and Europe at farmers markets and specialty grocers.

DESCRIPTION

Corella pears are small to medium in size and are irregular in shape ranging from oblong to squat with a large base that tapers to a smaller, rounded neck. The smooth skin has a mixture of green and yellow hues with some red blushing and prominent lenticels. The ivory to pale white flesh is creamy, moist, and crisp, encasing a few small black-brown seeds inside of a central core connecting to a dark brown stem. Corella pears can be consumed when firm and crunchy or can be left to ripen fully and consumed when soft and creamy. They are aromatic with a fresh, green scent and are very juicy with a sweet, mild flavor.

JOSEPHINE PEAR

Josephine pears are known as a winter pear in Australia, where it ripens in the winter season. They are also favored by home gardeners as the trees are fairly easy to grow and are a prolific fruit bearer.

DESCRIPTION

Josephine pears are small to medium in size and are oblong in shape with a bulbous base that tapers to a smaller, semi-crooked neck and long, slender, pale green-brown stem. The smooth skin is light green, glossy, and may have some russeting around the stem and pink blush where sunlight is most direct on the fruit. The skin also transforms from green to a green-yellow when ripe. The flesh is crisp, pale green, and moist, encasing a central fibrous core containing a few light brown, thin, and flat seeds. Josephine pears are crunchy and sweet when young and develop a soft, juicy, and tender texture with a rich, sweet flavor when ripe.

PARADISE PEAR

Paradise pears originated in Sicily, Italy, and made their way to Australia, where they are now widely grown commercially.

DESCRIPTION

Paradise pears are small, squat, and round in shape, similar to the size of a golf ball. The skin is firm and smooth and transforms from green to gold with red blush when ripe. The flesh is white, moist, and crisp, and there is a central core running the length of the fruit connecting to the stem that is tough, cream-colored, and dense. Inside the core, there are a few, gold to light brown, flat and slender seeds. Paradise pears are crunchy, sweet, fragrant, and juicy and stay crisp rather than softening when ripe.

Paradise pears are available in the spring through summer in Australia.

GRANNY SMITH APPLE

Granny Smith apples are native to Australia and were first discovered in 1868, growing as a chance seedling in a compost pile on the orchard of farmer Maria Ann “Granny” Smith in Ryde, New South Wales.

DESCRIPTION

Granny Smith apples are small to medium fruits, averaging 5 to 7 centimeters in diameter, and range in shape from round, oval, to conical. The skin is smooth, firm, chewy, and thick, remaining bright green when ripe and covered in tiny, white lenticels. In colder climates, the apples may also develop a yellow to pink blush. Underneath the surface, the white flesh is dense, crisp, and mildly aqueous with a fine, grainy consistency, encasing a central, fibrous core filled with small, brown-black seeds. Granny Smith apples have a balanced, sweet and acidic flavor with tangy, tart undertones.

 

SEASONALITY

Granny Smith apples are available year-round.

ROYAL GALA APPLE

Gala apples grow well in both warm and cold climates and as result can be found growing in apple growing regions across the globe.

​

DESCRIPTION

Gala apples are covered in a thin yellow to orange skin, highlighted with pink to red stripes that vary in hue dependent upon the apples maturity. Their dense flesh is creamy yellow and crisp, offering a mildly sweet flavor and flora aroma. Gala’s that are allowed to reach the peak of their sweetness on the tree will have a deeper red hue and a slightly sweeter flavor.

 

SEASONALITY

Gala Apples are available year-round.

PINK LADY APPLE

Pink Lady apples are very distinctive in flavour and colour, Pink Lady apples offer a delicious sweet-tart taste and a crisp slightly dry firm creamy-white flesh. This apple's tender skin has a pink to reddish-pink blush over a yellow background.

RUBYCOT APRICOT

DESCRIPTION

The Rubycot Apricot is an early maturing true hybrid plumcot.

It has a dark red skin with a light coating of fuzz. The flesh of the Rubycot is red and sweet with total soluble sugars (TSS) up to 16%. The fruit is fully mature in mid-December and tends to set light crops as bloom time is early.

​

SEASONALITY

The Rubycot is fully mature in mid-December and available for the month of December and January

QUEEN GARNET PLUM

DESCRIPTION

The Queen Garnet plum has a dark purple skin with a dark red flesh which is sweet and juicy like a blood plum

it has extremely high anthocyanin content as well as being full of dietary fibre. Queen Garnet has around 3-6 times the antioxidant content of blueberries and research has shown that it ay have beneficial effect in managing various, so called lifestyles diseases such as obesity, high blood pressure and hear disease. 

​

SEASONALITY

The Queen Garnet is available for the months of February and March.
